Aiyedatiwa vs Tunji Ojo: Beyond Rivalry
By Olumide Akinrinlola
I watched the video of Hon. Banji Okunomo regarding the alleged rift between Hon. Bunmi Tunji Ojo and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. As always, BBO spoke eloquently in that video eventhough I didn’t agree with some of his views. He is truly an asset and a valuable resource that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has unfortunately overlooked and left idle in his team.
There are many talented individuals in Ondo State, like Banji, who are not being engaged by the governor. This represents a significant weakness that Bunmi Tunji Ojo has identified in Aiyedatiwa’s approach and has cleverly taken advantage of.
By bringing together the best minds in the state, whom Aiyedatiwa has left idle, Bunmi Tunji Ojo has built a strong team. In doing so, he has indirectly taken the lead in Ondo State’s political landscape. Whether we like it or not, Bunmi Tunji Ojo has effectively gained control of the political structures within the APC and has won the loyalty of many because he understands the dynamics of politics better than Aiyedatiwa does. Much like Tinubu did with Buhari, Tunji has captured the hearts of the people in Ondo State through his performance, empowerment initiatives, and growing popularity born from his kindness.
It is not a crime for anyone to gain influence among their people, especially when they are doing good work. Interestingly, Tunji Ojo has never publicly expressed a desire to run for the governorship. So, why are Aiyedatiwa and his supporters feeling anxious? It is perplexing that a governor with so much power and state resources would be unsettled by the influence of a federal minister in his state.
I would advise the state governor to focus on making a positive impact on the lives of the people. He should implement meaningful empowerment programmes, carry out poverty alleviation initiatives, and use the substantial monthly allocations he receives wisely to fund productive projects. It is also crucial that he compensates those who truly supported him during his time in office and fosters a government that promotes inclusivity, allowing others in his cabinet to feel valued; and lastly, he should provide leadership by embracing and accommodating opposition within and outside the APC.
Furthermore, I must respectfully inform the governor that neither he nor his supporters have the right to prevent anyone from aspiring to political positions, including his current office. They do not possess the power to halt the political ambitions of those who wish to build their own political networks. Tunji Ojo has not committed any wrongdoing in gaining influence in Ondo State politics. If he chooses to run against the governor, should the constitution permit Aiyedatiwa to seek a second term, that is his right. This shouldn’t generate unnecessary controversy and unsettle the governor’s camp.
Every responsible citizen of Nigeria should advocate for a second-term ticket for elected representatives who have performed well, while opposing those who have fallen short of expectations. Healthy competition is vital for our democracy, and I expect all supporters of good governance to think along these lines.
I firmly believe that Tunji Ojo is not employing any underhanded tactics to win people over. Instead, he is receiving support because he is genuinely impacting lives through empowerment and job distribution, which has helped alleviate poverty for many families. It is natural for people to love and appreciate someone who helps them to provide for themselves and their families. Tunji understands how to connect with others, and his results speak for themselves.
His Excellency has no reason to feel jittery about Tunji Ojo. He possesses all the qualities needed to excel, surpass his predecessors, and establish a political stronghold that no one can disrupt if he chooses to run again or supports a successor. Instead of viewing Tunji as a threat, it would be wise for the governor to recognise the potential for collaboration and unity, which could ultimately strengthen the political landscape of Ondo State.
I come peace.
